  • 2-5 evil red balls.
  • Beanbags.

Description:

  • Choose 2-5 kids to be it and give them each an evil red ball (these are the
    aliens).
  •  Everyone else is an astronaut.
  • Scatter the beanbags all around the gym, and hold onto the empty bin.
  • If an astronaut is tagged by an alien, they must got to the black hole (the
circle in the middle of the gym floor – if you don’t have a circle, use cones to
mark off a circle in the middle of the gym).
  • To save an astronaut from the black hole, another astronaut must slide (NOT
THROW), a beanbag into the black hole and an astronaut must pick it up.
  • The astronaut must then leave the black hole (holding the beanbag high up
over their head – to show that they have been freed), and must bring the
beanbag back to the teacher (who is holding the beanbag bin and constantly
re-circulating the beanbags around the gym).
  • Once the astronaut has given his beanbag back to the teacher, he rejoins the
    game.
  • Astronauts can only hold one beanbag at a time.
  • Aliens CANNOT follow the teacher and just wait to tag a returning astronaut.
  • Aliens CAN guard, but not go inside, the black hole, and CAN try and block beanbags with their feet, and KICK THEM away, to keep them from the as-
    tronauts
  • BEANBAGS SHOULD ONLY EVER BE SLID ON THE GROUND, NEVER
    THROWN!

Zoo http://www.pegames.org/warm-up/zoo Sat, 11 Feb 2017 18:15:23 +0000 http://www.pegames.org/?p=3630 Equipment:
  • 2-5 evil red balls.

Description:

  • Choose 2-5 kids to be it and give them Evil Red Balls.
  • If you get tagged by an Evil Red Ball, you must go down on your hands and
knees wherever you are and pick and animal.
  • Whichever animal you pick, you are only allowed to make the noise of that
    animal.
  • To be freed, someone has to come and correctly guess what you are.
  • They are allowed to take as many guesses as they want.
  • If someone is tagged while guessing, then they must drop to their knees and
become the same animal as the person they were guessing from (said person
can whisper their animal to them).
  • If there is a group of animals, the minute someone guesses correctly, then
    they are all free.
  • Change taggers often.
  • To increase the difficulty level of this one, tell the kids when they get tagged
they must drop to their knees and act out an animal (no noise), with all of the
    same rules as above.
  • Once you have been an animal, you CAN NOT pick that animal again for the
rest of the game (even when taggers are changed).

Mystery http://www.pegames.org/warm-up/mystery Sun, 07 Aug 2016 17:08:41 +0000 http://www.pegames.org/?p=3572 Equipment:
  • 2-5 evil red balls.

Description:

  • Choose 2-5 kids to be it and give them Evil Red Balls.
  • If you get tagged by an Evil Red Ball, then you must sit down on the ground, bring your knees up to your face, close your eyes and put your head down into the palms of your hands.
  • To be freed, someone must come up behind you and put their hand on your back. Then, they must say your name (they can say it as many times as they want, but it is the only word they can say).
  • The frozen person has ONE GUESS to figure out whose hand is on their back. If they guess right, they’re back in the game. If they guess wrong, they need to wait for someone else to come and save them.
  • To spice it up, you can have the kids say silly or nonsense words instead of the student’s name.
  • Switch Evil Red Balls often to keep the game fresh and new!

Red, Purple, Green http://www.pegames.org/warm-up/red-purple-green Sat, 16 Apr 2016 18:29:15 +0000 http://www.pegames.org/?p=3541 Equipment:
  • 5-10 Red dodgeballs.
  • 5-10 Purple dodgeballs.
  • 5-10 Green dodgeballs.

Description:

  • The dodgeballs for this game don’t have to be red, purple and green, they just have to be 3 different colours.
  • Scatter the dodgeballs all over the gym.
  • Tell the students that they can only have one dodgeball (either between their elbows, at their feet, or in a hand), at a time.
  • Red dodgeballs can only be grabbed/touched/picked up with elbows.
  • Purple dodgeballs can only be moved/kicked with feet.
  • Green dodgeballs can be picked up BY ONE HAND ONLY.
  • If a student moves a dodgeball other than in the way its colour is specified above, said student must freeze on the spot, spread their legs, and put their hands together in a point above their heads (they are now a human cone).
  • If a student is tagged by a red or purple dodgeball below the shoulders (these dodgeballs can be thrown with elbows, tagged with while being held by elbows,
or manipulated by feet), then said student turns into a human cone.
  • The only way to be saved is for someone to pick up a green dodgeball and roll it between your legs.
  • Green dodgeballs can only save.
  • If someone is tagged while holding a green dodgeball, they freeze on the spot, can take one shot with their green dodgeball to try and save someone else (not themselves!), and then must turn into a human cone and wait to be saved.
  • To add difficulty to this game, have the human cones do the plank or pushup position instead, and/or, have the kids use trickier body parts to move the balls.
  • This game pairs well with specific sports, where you’d like the kids to work on sports-specific skills while having fun.

Human Caterpillar – How Many? http://www.pegames.org/weekly-challenges/human-caterpillar-how-many Sun, 29 Nov 2015 18:20:08 +0000 http://www.pegames.org/?p=3433 Equipment:
  • None

Description:

  • The object of the challenge is to see how many pairs of feet you can get into
the air while only having hands still touching the ground (i.e. no other body
    parts).
  • The students must work together as a class to see how many feet they can get
off the ground in total (remember, for the feet to count the only body part
that students can have touching the ground are their hands).
  • Count all of the feet that are in the air (with the only other parts touching the
ground being hands and those feet that are not being counted in the total),
and then write your class’s best number on the board.

Beanbag Stack – How Many? http://www.pegames.org/weekly-challenges/beanbag-stack-how-many Thu, 08 Oct 2015 00:52:21 +0000 http://www.pegames.org/?p=3372 Equipment:
  • A bin (equipment bins work great).
  • A whole bunch of beanbags.
  • Timer.

Description:

  • Split the class in two and have them sit with their backs against the wall at either end of the playing area.
  • Dump all of the bean bags out in the middle of the playing area, and flip one of the bins upside down and put it in the center of the playing area.
  • When the teacher says “Go,” start the timer.
  • The first two kids from each line run to the center, grab any 1 bean bag that they want, and start to build a tower on top of the overturned bin in the center of the room.
  • Once the two bean bags are stacked on top of one another, the kids run back to their lines and high-five the next person in line. The whole line then slides over, on their bums, so that the person who just went can attach themselves to the end of the line.
  • THE NEXT PERSON IN LINE CAN NOT STAND AND GO UNTIL THEY RECEIVE A HIGH-FIVE FROM THE PERSON ON THEIR TEAM THAT JUST WENT.
  • If the tower falls, the round is over and the class must start over again.
  • Set the timer for 2 minutes, and see how many bean bags high the class can stack the tower before it falls over.
  • Do as many times as you like, and then put your class total on the board.

Coin Toss http://www.pegames.org/warm-up/coin-toss Sun, 16 Aug 2015 17:59:35 +0000 http://www.pegames.org/?p=3365 Equipment:
  • 1 frisbee or giant dice.

Description:

  • Have students pick a partner and face that partner in the middle of the gym.
  • Have each student decide with their partner who will be “Top” and who will be “Bottom”.
  • The teacher will stand in the middle of the gym and flip the frisbee high into the air like a coin toss.
  • If the frisbee lands with the top showing, the student who is “Top” must chase the student who is “Bottom” and try to catch them before they reach the end of the gym.
  • If the frisbee lands with the bottom showing, the student who is “Bottom” must chase the student who is “Top” and try to catch them before they reach
    the end of the gym.
  • If a student tags their partner before he / she reaches the end of the gym, that student gets a point.
  • If a student does not tag their partner before he / she reaches the end of the gym, that student does not get a point.
  • Have students change partners every few minutes in order to change the game dynamics.
  • This game also works great with a giant dice, where one student is “Odd,” and one is “Even.”

Human Ring Toss – How Many? http://www.pegames.org/weekly-challenges/human-ring-toss-how-many Sat, 18 Jul 2015 17:28:18 +0000 http://www.pegames.org/?p=3344 Equipment:
  • Class set of rings.
  • Timer.

Description:

  • Select 7 students to stand on a line at the end of the room closest to the door.
  • All other students line up at the other end of the room in two lines, with the bin of rings between them.
  • When the teacher says “Go,” the first two students in each line can take 1 ring and run to another line several feet in front of the first line.
  • Once at the this line, they try and throw the ring into the air and have one of the students on the lines catch it on their arm. The students can not use their
hands to catch it, but must try and slip their hand through the ring in the air so that it slides down their arm.
  • Each caught ring is worth 1 point.
  • Students waiting in line must be high-fived before they can leave to toss their ring.
  • See how many points the class can get in two minutes, and then put the total on the board.
